The Weather:

The geographical positioning of Thessaloniki bordering the Mediterranean and near the Aegean Sea has blessed it with a desirable Mediterranean climate for most part of the year. The summers in Thessaloniki sees average temperatures between 23 to 25 degree Celsius. But unlike Athens the temperature does not soar up to 40 degree Celsius however, 30 degree Celsius is not uncommon.

The Winter season between the months of December and February is the time when the city witnesses the continental climate. The average time during this period range from 5 to 7 degree Celsius and during certain very bad wintry days the temperature drops to even -10 degree Celsius. The Autumn and Spring seasons see milder climates with frequent rainfalls that increases as the winters get close.

Fishing in Thessaloniki:

Fishing is a very popular pastime activity in Greece and in Thessaloniki in particular. With its coast on the Mediterranean sea Thessaloniki has access to a wide array of big game fish species. Several fishing charter boats operate from this coast and provide great fishing experience to ardent anglers. The Blue II Boat is one of the pioneer charter boats in Thessaloniki that is lead by Captain Kostas Kiritsis who has over 24 years of angling experience in Thessaloniki. Captain Kostas says that fishing in Thessaloniki is successful throughout the year and that you will be able to reel in one or the other kind of sportfish from these waters any time of the year. He says that the best of all seasons for sportfishing is during the months of August, September and October. The species that are found in these waters according to Captain Kostas are Bluefin Tuna, Swordfish, Bigeye Tuna, Greater Amberjack, Grouper, Snapper, Barracuda and many more. The largest Amberjack caught on Blue II weighed over 55 kg. Captain Kostas also describes that fishing techniques like trolling, bottom fishing, live baiting and drifting are practised in his boat depending on the fish that is being targeted.

The usual fishing spots are found 10 to 20 m away from the coast and these spots are reached in 30 to 45 minutes in the boat. When targeting certain specific species the boat is often taken as far as 60 to 80 km from the shore and it takes close to 120 minutes to reaches these far locations. The depth at which fishing takes place ranges from 30 m to 400 m again depending on what species is being targeted.
